Your GPS Navigator’s Not Complete Without Accessories

October 31st, 2009

The most recent GPS devices found in stores usually have enough functions to accomodate most car owners who would like their car navigation to be straightforward and safe. Yet there may be times in which you reach the limits of your GPS device and still would prefer that your GPS device had more functions or more strong design for not-so-smooth situations. A great model to look into is the Garmin Nuvi 770 Portable GPS Navigator.

Don’t sell your GPS device and buy a better one to meet your evolving needs just yet. Stores have many GPS accessories that may attach to your device and may offer some additional functionality that can suit your needs. The prices of most of these GPS accessories are obviously nowhere near the price of your next GPS device. Below are a few of the common GPS accessories that are made by all of the larger companies.

Chargers

Most of the less expensive models do not last very long because of many of them posessing a battery life of a measly 2-3 hours. Because of this you are required to charge your GPS devices every now and then during long drives. Even though most of those devices usually are packaged with a GPS charger, there will probably be instances when the charger breaks or might be lost. Do not settle for those imitation chargers as they will likely mess up the battery. Always use chargers sold by the manufacturer of your GPS device. These chargers will fully charge the device quickly, which lets you rely on it for long road trips. A nice option to consider is the Garmin Nuvi 770 GPS Navigation system.

Carrying Cases

These GPS accessories can be quite low-cost and helpful accessories that are engineered to defend your GPS device from exposure to an assortment of elements. Even though some GPS devices are rugged enough to withstand these elements because of their own casings, a carrying case provides one more barrier against the world, and the cases with straps are easier to hold on to. Travel cases are improved styles of carrying cases which are still compact, yet made for holding additional GPS accessories such as chargers.

Adhesive Discs

A few of the GPS devices could be incredibly annoying to fasten to certain kinds of car windshields. After the frustration becomes insufferable, think about spending a couple of dollars on a few adhesive disks. Attaching your GPS device needs to be as easy as sticking this disc to a car’s windshield or another smooth surface and then mounting the device onto your disc.

Car Kits

The kind and quantity of accessories offered which comprise a car kit may vary according to the maker, but in general, car kits are the handiest GPS accessories to get if you don’t know what accessories you actually need or if you simply wish to be prepared for any inevitable situations. Most of the car kits include mounting kits, adhesive disks, data cables, and power adapters. In case you have lost some accessories, a car kit may easily replace your supply or provide more for “just in case” scenarios. Take a look at the Garmin Nuvi 770 Portable GPS Navigator for a nice unit.

Certain models might need more accessories than others; so the most practical way to learn about accessories for a certain GPS device is to read through the product page which applies to your device and look for the accessories made for your device to avoid making any redundant purchases.

HavingThe PSP GPS Receiver

October 31st, 2009

The PSP GPS receiver is an accessory you are able to put in onto your Play Station portable. It doesn’t weigh a lot, however it manages to make your PSP into a 20 channel GPS receiver with an accuracy of 5 meters. The PSP GPS receiver software allows you to mark points of attention on town maps and search for addresses.

Locations can be bookmarked as a favourite destination. You may add comments for each destination. When you want to share these with somebody else, it is easy to exchange them with other PSP users.

This receiver turns your PSP into a hand held GPS unit. Without having to spend a load more money, your movable game system has evolved into a totally new use.

It is certain that with this unusual user base the PSP GPS receiver will get some engaging applications to go with it. Now in Japan, one of the software programs includes maps of all the japanese golfing courses. Golfers can use their PSP to test how far they’re from the green and any obstructions they may encounter. Another package features vehicle navigation with road maps of Japan. New maps can be downloaded using the built in networking capacities of the PSP.

Weighing in at just a half oz., this accessory actually doesn’t add a lot of additional weight to your PSP. The receiver itself is only slightly larger than the average thumb. It plugs simply into the USB port at the pinnacle of the PSP. When not in use, it can be folded down over the UMD slot to stay out of the way.

Besides being practical, this receiver also will be used in some of the PSP games like Metal Gear Solid : Portable Ops. The GPS will have software to use with the game to help users find infantrymen for their plan of attack. In time, other games will be able to use it too.

As with any GPS, always read the hand-held GPS reviews before you purchase. It will help you choose the one that best suits your needs without wasting your money. Reviews will let you see the feeble points and robust points of each system.

The PSP GPS receiver will permit you to make sensible use of your PSP besides playing games. As time goes on, more software programs will be provided from Sony to make this receiver even more useful. The PSP GPS receiver is a great way to bring in yourself to GPS technology.

GPS Charts Course For Success

October 31st, 2009

GPS systems have become increasingly popular, portable and affordable. Sales for this small navigation system are off the charts, and they are the hottest ticket at every electronics store and big box retailer around.

So what is GPS exactly, how does it work, and why is it so popular? What other uses are there for technology? For the answers to this and more, keep reading.

What is GPS?

GPS is an abbreviation for Global Positioning System. This technology was developed by the US Department of Defense, and employs a network of 24 strategically placed satellites around the globe. It was originally intended for military use only, but the government made it available for anyone to use in the 1980s. That coupled with latest advances in portable technology has made GPS the new hot item. It is extremely popular with those who drive for a living, such as couriers.

How Does it Work?

A GPS receiver uses signals transmitted by these GPS satellites to triangulate exact locations. The 24 satellites circle the planet twice a day and transmit signals to the earth, which are what the receivers use. The receivers basically use the difference between the time a signal was transmitted and received to calculate how far away the satellite is.

In order to track movement as well as calculate an object’s latitude and longitude, a GPS receiver has to get signals from at least three satellites. If you add one more satellite to the mix, you can track altitude as well. One the receiver has the location, other variables can be accounted for such as speed, distance to destination, and more.

New advances in GPS technology such as Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) and Differential GPS (DGPS) have made it possible to get accuracy down to within three meters of a signal. While WAAS is widely available in newer GPS systems, DGPS requires additional equipment and is mostly used in marine systems and by the US Coast Guard.

Popular Uses for GPS

The most common application for GPS is in small receivers that can be mounted in your car or carried by hand. These compact devices are usually used for directions, and include speakers that give turn by turn spoken directions to avoid being distracted by looking at a tiny map. But GPS users are discovering new uses for the technology daily.

One of the first widespread uses of GPS before the handheld was the Lo-Jack. This was a chip implanted in a vehicle that police stations could use to locate stolen vehicles. The Lo-Jack became the inspiration for locating other objects, especially living ones.

GPS collars have become popular for wandering pets. So when little Spot or Fluffy can’t be found, you can simply use a GPS signal to find them. Missing children can be found with a popular cell phone software that uses the GPS signal to locate them.

The new handheld revolution owes a lot of its success to the iPod. This popular portable music player spawned the invention of parallel hard-drive technology, which allows you to double the disk space of a hard drive without increasing the physical dimensions.

So as you can see, the GPS has a lot a reasons for its recent success. And with a sharp and steady increase in sales, the technology has become a lot more popular and affordable than before. You can buy a inexpensive receiver with a major name brand starting at about $150.
