Topo Maps for iPhone Won’t Lose You

July 7th, 2010

Topo Maps for iPhone Won’t Lose You
If you’re driving around on pavement in the United States, chances are you’re often within cellular service, which means you can use Google Maps and Google Earth, along with your iPhone’s built-in GPS feature, to pinpoint your location and find your way. The problem with Google Maps and Google Earth is that you really need to have access to a compatible cellular service tower that can handle data.

Ping.fm Your Favorite Sites with Pingle for iPhone

July 3rd, 2010

In this video, I review an application I had been looking forward to for some time called Pingle. Pingle works on iPhone and iPod touch and it works with the popular site, Ping.fm. I’ve talked about Ping.fm on Bwana.TV before and it’s basic function is to update multiple blogging and micro-blogging sites at once. Up until Pingle, I had been using the iPhone optimized Ping.fm website. Unfortunately, I couldn’t utilize my iPhone’s GPS chip nor my camera using this web application. Pingle solves this issue by utilizing all the cool features of Ping.fm and the power of the iPhone. One can access the camera or GPS functionality with one tap. Pingle will update your location and post a picture directly to Ping.fm using the rich API of the application. Combined with it’s visual representation of services using icons, history, and speed, Pingle gives you a great way to update. A bonus feature is that Pingle can utilize a bookmarklet to post links to Ping.fm right from Mobile Safari which like Tweetie (another app I reviewed on Bwana.TV) I was happy to beta test Pingle for the author and have been pleased while using it! Pingle is available on the iTunes App Store for $1.99 and I give it a giant thumbs up! Enjoy.

Magellan ToughCase ruggedizes the iPhone while improving GPS accuracy
The iPhone works pretty well as a handheld GPS receiver, but it has some serious flaws, namely toughness, battery life, and accuracy. The Toughcase protect the [...]

Automatic Crash Notification Is Now On Your Cell Phone

July 1st, 2010

From seat belts to airbags to Onstar, car safety keeps advancing and it appears that My911’s new phone app is the next step in making your car travel as safe as possible. Technology starts responding to crashes before you or I can- your air bags are fast enough to meet you halfway to the dashboard, for example. The competition to provide the greatest automobile safety has been fierce, and as usual, we the consumers are the winners. Recently, concepts like Onstar have pushed things further, beginning the emergency response process before you could get your phone out of your pocket. The next step has been to get this automatic collision notification on your smartphone, and My911 has done it.

This may seem like it’s asking a bit much of your phone, but that’s the fun of cutting-edge technology. If you’ve seen a teenager on the bus, tilting his phone back and forth, you’ve seen the accelerometer that comes in smartphones in action. This technology also helps track your movement if you have a navigation system, and now My911 has patented a way for it to detect crash level G-forces and automatically get the emergency response ball rolling so that help can arrive as soon as possible.

Since your phone can now sense a car crash, the next logical step is for it to do what you would do anyway, only faster, more precisely, and automatically. Because smartphones also come equipped with GPS, they can not only sense the crash, but explain where you are and how to get there faster than any human, conscious or not.

So what happens if your phone is wrong? You have an opportunity to manually cancel the call. Furthermore, your phone contacts an actual human who will attempt to talk to you, then make your 911 call for you and pass your location on to the emergency response personnel. This is the next step in automotive safety and emergency response. As the versatility of the phone is applied to more and more fields, the peace of mind that one little device provides will continue to grow.

Find out how automatic crash response got on smartphones at www.my-911.com. Get a new level of peace of mind for yourself and your family.
